Privacy Policy
Fork Knows — what’s for dinner? Fork Knows. Last updated on the date this app version was published.
What we collect
- Account data — your email address and sign-in credentials, handled by our authentication provider. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email and basic profile.
- Household data — household name, size, invite code, member list and dietary preferences.
- Diner profiles — names, adult or child designation, appetite, favourites, dislikes, diet preferences and allergies you enter. Child profiles are created and managed by the adult who owns the household; children do not get their own accounts or sign-in.
- Pantry and grocery data — items, quantities, units, dates and any prices you record.
- Receipt images and extracted data — photographs you upload and the store, date, items and prices read from them.
- Meal data — generated dinners, dinner picks, cooking sessions and the pantry deductions they caused.
Why we collect it
Every item above exists to run a feature you asked for: keeping your pantry accurate, building dinners around what you already own, excluding allergens, writing your shopping list and showing what your household has spent. We do not sell personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.
AI processing
Some features are optional and only run when you tap a button: reading a receipt photo, detecting food in a pantry photo, generating a dinner and planning a week. When you use one, the relevant content — the image, or a text summary of your pantry, diet preferences and allergy exclusions — is sent to our AI provider to produce the result. Your email address and password are never sent. No AI request is made just by opening a screen.
Voice and the microphone
Voice input is optional and push-to-talk: the microphone turns on only after you tap a microphone button, and it turns off as soon as that request ends. Fork Knows is never listening in the background and has no wake word.
When you use voice input, the audio captured from your microphone is sent to your browser’s speech recognition service to be converted into text. On Chrome and on Android, that service is Google’s speech recognition, and the audio leaves your device as part of that service. Fork Knows does not record, store or retain any audio itself. Only the resulting text — for example “add two gallons of milk” — is used, and it changes nothing until you confirm it on the review screen.
If you do not want audio leaving your device, simply do not use the voice features. Everything in Fork Knows remains fully available through manual entry. Voice output — steps and tour narration read aloud — uses the voices already installed on your device and makes no network call. Voice features can also be switched off in Settings.
Who can see your data
Household data is visible to members of that household only. Access is enforced on the server by row-level security rules, not just in the app interface. Our hosting, database and AI providers process data on our behalf to deliver the service.
Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account at any time inside the app: You › Account › Delete my account. You are asked to type DELETE to confirm, so it cannot happen by accident. If you can no longer sign in, you can request deletion from our public account deletion page.
Deleted immediately
- Your login and profile, including your display name and diet preferences.
- Your pantry items, shopping list, receipts and uploaded receipt images.
- Your recipes, dinners, meal plans, purchases, spending and cooking history.
- Your household membership.
- Households where you are the last member, together with all of their shared data. If other members remain, their data is kept and ownership passes to another member.
Retained after deletion
- Deletion requests submitted on the public page — the email address supplied, kept up to 90 days so we can show the request was received and handled (legal obligation and dispute handling).
- Security and abuse logs from our hosting provider, such as IP address and request time — kept up to 30 days for security and fraud prevention.
- Encrypted infrastructure backups — deleted records age out within 30 days on the provider’s normal schedule and are never restored into the app.
Nothing retained is used to rebuild your account, and none of it is sold or used for advertising.
Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections and stored with access rules that restrict each household to its own records. No service can promise perfect security, and we do not claim to.
Children
Fork Knows is intended for adults managing a household. Child diner profiles contain only the food information an adult chooses to enter, and are controlled entirely by that adult.
